The function template <CODE>put</CODE> provides a uniform interface for writing a character to a <A HREF='../concepts/sink.html'>Sink</A>, for use in the definitions of new <A HREF='../concepts.html#filter_concepts'>Filter</A> types (<I>see</I> <A HREF='#example'>Example</A>).
