* Provide a simple and convenient default behavior for the casual user, yet allow a maximum of customization for the power user. Follow the "Don't pay for what you don't use" principle. Features that you don't use should not affect your performance negatively.
* Provide the same interface for one-dimensional and multi-dimensional histograms. This makes the interface easier to learn, and makes it easier to move a project from one-dimensional to multi-dimensional analysis. This sounds obvious, but other libraries don't do that.
